Vintage Pye P31MBQ Portable Radio - Valve / Tube - c. 1954 - Car / Picnic / Prop. 29 x 21 X 11 cm. Clean, complete and undamaged with only minor wear - internals also clean but operation untested. An attractive, compact and lightweight vintage radio built in to a attache-style case.
I have not tested it but the previous owner assured me that it's a working example... Then again, he also told me that the last time he used it regularly was in 1965! The radio has an automatic on-off function triggered by the lid. It's also the rarer variant that accepts mains as well as battery power.I have not found any damage or missing parts, the internals are clean and complete (no battery acid corrosion) and it seems that this classic radio could be restored to reliable working condition by a competent new owner or a specialist without major work. Otherwise a lovely prop or display piece. The rexine faux-crocodile covered case is as you see in the pictures - some patina and marks but clean and undamaged with minimal wear to the edges and rust-free, shiny fittings. The dials are secure and turn smoothly and the brushed metal finish is unspoilt. The paper warning label is still present but inevitably a little worn. The overall appearance is certainly well above-average for a 70-year-old portable of this type.
